MAIN CHALLENGE
To take a large, intricate, technical ball wall concept and figure out how it will be built and detailed
The Innovation in Bloom ball wall is a 25 foot structure that celebrates the countryside and the cultures around San Jose. Visitors interact with the balls by sending them up to the top of the wall with pneumatics. As the balls make their way down the wall, they activate flowers and animals, add sounds to the air with plinko areas and bells, and culminate in magnetic areas where pieces can be moved to activate sensors. When combined together, these sensors set off a central trigger called the “Brain Storm” where ping pong balls rain down upon the visitor in a closed-system deluge.
My job was to take this concept and make it real. Alongside the fabrication team, I developed the methodology for how we would layer the backgrounds, designed and provided the cut files so the background could be easily installed along with snaking electrical wires. I also detailed the Brain Storm and how that would be built around.
